Kyle's Position: I believe government has an important role to play in our society. But that role must be limited. And in the work that it does, government must be effective and efficient. Government should not be the place we turn for employment. Our nation's strength is in each of us - in our entrepreneurial spirit. It is through this entrepreneurial spirit that this economy will produce jobs.
In Maryland we need to create an environment for business to expand. This means giving business a place at the table in Annapolis instead of locking them outside. In order to create jobs we need companies and people to risk their investments and life savings on the reputation of Maryland. That is why we need to face up to our fiscal challenges.
We also need to cut taxes to attract businesses and jobs. This is why I support: repealing the recently passed 20% sales tax and tax on higher income earners, ensuring our taxes are lower our neighboring states such as Virginia and Pennsylvania, putting in place a temporary moratorium on taxes in the biotech sector, and lowering the personal income tax. We need to foster innovation and new business by providing tax incentives to companies to establish headquarters in abandoned properties, especially properties that were formerly government owned.
In terms of education, we need to develop a skilled workforce for the new jobs market that is coming because of BRAC. We must find ways to retrain workers who lost jobs. This may include reforming the community college system to a point where there are specialized community colleges for various fields. This also means partnering with world wide universities through online technologies to increase access to education. Most importantly, this means greater parental control over their child's education.
In short, to strengthen our economy and bring jobs to our state, allowing entrepreneurs to start new businesses and investors to take risks with their money, I will work to ensure that our governance is fiscally responsible, we have more business friendly regulations, and we reduce our excessive tax burden. I will also work to improve Maryland’s education system and provide more opportunity for all Marylanders.
